Jumber Lezhava - The
King of Travellers
I
gave my life to Freedom
|
Childhood
I, Jumber Lezhava was born June 23, 1939 in Tbilisi
(Georgia). Lost my parents early. I finished Tbilisi
Secondary Railway school for boys on the silver medal.
I was the winner in

|
the olimpic competitions in maths,
physics and drawing. My invention in physics was awarded
a Diploma. The same time I was attracted with sport:
played football, basketball, table-tennis, gymnastics
and etc.
Collage-years
I graduated from the Tbilisi Politechnic Institute's
department of Automatics and Telemechanics. I’m
an electric engineer. My Diploma paper “Electronic
Disperce-ment” was used to measure the distance
target of enemies submarines.
While being a student I took the first-class in wrestling,
went in body-building, was a mountain-climber, I have
conquered several peaks of the Caucasus mountains. I
used to travel in different parts of Georgia by foot,
by horse and by bicycle. I’ve been to almost all
the republics of the former Soviet Union by car and
bicycle. I’ve trravelled on the Black, Azov and
Baltic Seas, on the rivers Rioni, Mtkvari, Aragvi and
Volga by boats and yachts.
After the graduation I got married. I have two daughters.

Illness
On January 6, 1986 after one
of the usual training I found myself in the hospital.
Doctors adviced immediate operation with a diagnosis
of ileus.
After this 3 meters of intestine was cut out of my stomach.
During the year, with the same diagnosis I got twice
at the hospital. The length of my intestine was reduced
by one more meter. I refused to have the third operation,
since the doctors didn’t guarantee my survival.
Twice I experienced clinical death.

Vision
I was expecting death any time. Being in agony I saw
three old people. They couldn’t look into my eyes.
As soon as I was going to enter the dark tunnel, one
of them took my hand and told me: it’s too early
for you to come, you must turn back, your deed’ll
surprise the whole world.
The
great tragedy
My wife Liana Alibegashvili and I loved each other very
much. We had a nice and sweet family. Daughters got
married. One gave birth to two boys, second to two girls.
We’re going to have a happy old age.
June 2, 1990 my wife came down with an incurable virus
and died. My life changed completely.

Idea
and aim of the traveelling
I wanted to make 36 hour record in pressing-up, but
the Guinness representatives refused me, they said that
pressing-ups during 36 hours would be unhuman for the
body, which wasn’t in their interests. What can
I do, to astonish the world? I was only thinking about
this. Once my friend’s son – Rati Kikacheishvili
(he has died in Abkhazian war at the age of 18) told
me: Uncle Jumber, if you’re so strong go around
the world by bicycle… It was a wonderful idea.
I began preparations, prepared the route and the program:
I was very much interested in the lives and customs
of people around the world, ways of defence of healthy
life, to improve their environment, establish freedom,
cultural relations for developement progressive links
among the countries. Together with kindness of the bicycle
as an avowed pure transport I would like to show the
whole world my own method in push-ups, that will improve
people’s soul and physical health and defend them
from different deceases.
Idea and program was acceptable and I started my long
travel from Rustavi (the town near the capital of Georgia-Tbilisi)
in August, 1993.
I saw my wife in my dream several hours before starting:
Liana smiled and said to me: “I believe in you
Jumber.”
