Georgians claim that their country was bestowed by the God. According to a Georgian legend, while God was distributing lands among the peoples of the world, the Georgians were late. They showed up when all lands were given away. On the question what was the reason for being late, the Georgians answered with truthfulness that they were having a feast and were drinking the toast to God.
God burst into admiration and gave to the Georgians a part of the Paradise (the land that God reserved for himself). Thus, a joke came into being that it is Georgians fault that God was left without a living place and was compelled to ascend to Heaven.
Georgia is a destiny of the Virgin (Saint Mary).

Crossing famous Dmanisi complex and meeting the rarest samples of human architectural genius in Mtskheta and surroundings, tourist will face the breathtaking fixtures from Uplistsikhe – the guest from the Stone Age. It is dated from the 6th century B.C. and is first mentioned in the chronicles of the 1st century A.D. Carved into rocky plateau we find huge echoing halls, long meandering corridor-streets, chambers for pagan worship and even the remains of Georgia's oldest theatre, complete with auditorium, stage and orchestra pit.
Like the other cave-towns of Georgia, it is akin to the similar rock structures of Urartu and the Hittites, which are rooted in the prehistoric traditions of the peoples of the Near East.

Georgian historical region - Vardzia

Georgia is known to Greeks and Romans as Kolkheti (western part of the country) and Iberia (eastern part).
The Orthodox Christianity became the state religion in Georgia in 337. According to the legend, this religion was brought in Kartli by the preacher Nino from Cappadokia. In Mtskheta she had erected a cross made from vine branches for praying. Many holy treasures are kept in Georgia. Among them the most magnificent is the holy shroud of Jesus Christ, brought by the merchants who witnessed Christ’s crucifixion and which is buried in the great Cathedral Svetitskoveli, built in 11th century.
Since Georgia always was and is populated with people of different nationalities, religions and traditions, there are Catholic churches, Jewish synagogues and Muslim mosques all around the nation.
